How to Make Your Own Natural Candles in 5 Easy Steps

Candles can create a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room, but store-bought candles can contain harmful chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Making your own natural candles is a great way to ensure that you are using safe and eco-friendly ingredients, while also allowing you to customize the scent and color of your candles. In this DIY tutorial, we will guide you through the process of making your own natural candles in just 5 easy steps.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

To make your own natural candles, you will need the following supplies:

  • Soy wax flakes
  • Candle wicks
  • Candle fragrance oil
  • Candle dye (optional)
  • Glass jars or containers
  • Double boiler or a heatproof container and a saucepan
  • Wooden skewers or chopsticks
  • Thermometer

All of these supplies can be easily found at a craft store or online.

Step 2: Melt the Wax

The first step in making your own natural candles is to melt the soy wax flakes. You can do this by using a double boiler or by creating your own makeshift double boiler by placing a heatproof container in a saucepan filled with water. Heat the wax until it reaches a temperature of around 180°F (82°C).

Step 3: Add Fragrance and Dye

Once the wax has melted, it's time to add fragrance and dye. Add a few drops of your desired fragrance oil and stir well. If you want to add color to your candles, you can add a few drops of candle dye at this point as well. Be sure to stir the wax thoroughly to distribute the fragrance and color evenly.

Step 4: Prepare the Wicks and Containers

While the wax is cooling slightly, prepare your candle wicks and containers. Attach the wicks to the bottom center of your glass jars or containers using a drop of melted wax. Use wooden skewers or chopsticks to hold the wicks in place as the wax sets.

Step 5: Pour the Wax

Finally, it's time to pour the wax into the prepared containers. Make sure the wax has cooled to around 130°F (54°C) before pouring, as pouring wax that is too hot can cause the containers to crack. Slowly pour the wax into the containers, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top. Allow the wax to cool completely before trimming the wicks to about ¼ inch.

And that's it! You now have your very own natural candles. Experiment with different fragrances and colors to create candles that are unique to your style and taste. Not only are these candles safe and eco-friendly, but they also make great gifts for friends and family. So go ahead, get creative, and enjoy the warm glow of your homemade candles!
